Meet Lily from Haverhill, a determined and inspiring young woman who is running the TTP Cambridge Half Marathon in support of CPSL Mind, a charity that, she says, has been instrumental in transforming her life. Her journey is a testament to resilience, growth, and the power of giving back.
“I’ve suffered from anxiety since I was around 13,” Lily explains. “At 16, things were at their worst. I couldn’t leave the house, had regular panic attacks, and even going to school or getting on the bus felt impossible.”
For Lily, these years were isolating and overwhelming. Everyday tasks seemed insurmountable, and her world became smaller and smaller. But her life changed when she was referred to CPSL Mind.
“They quite literally changed my life,” Lily says with heartfelt gratitude. “I also received therapy, including CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) from another organisation, which helped me rewire my thought processes and see things in a completely new light. Now, I’m a completely different person – I barely recognise my old self. Last year, I even got on a train to Nottingham by myself. That might seem like a small step to other people, but for me, it was a huge breakthrough and a moment I’ll never forget.”
Fast forward to today, and Lily has come a long way from those difficult years. “I no longer wake up feeling anxious or have to worry about simple, everyday things like going to the shops. Of course, anxiety will always be in the background, but I’ve built tools to manage it. I’ve come so far, and I know that 16-year-old me would be so proud of where I am now. It’s all thanks to the incredible work of CPSL Mind.”
Lily’s transformation didn’t stop at improving her mental health. Now 21 and in her third year at Anglia Ruskin University, where she’s studying Psychology, she’s using her experiences to help others. “Mental health is such an important topic, and I’ve seen firsthand how support can change lives. That’s why CPSL Mind is a cause so close to my heart. It’s not just me – other members of my family have also used their services and benefitted greatly.”
Giving Back: A New Challenge
Last year, Lily decided it was time to give back to the charity that had done so much for her and her family. “I started volunteering for Mind in Mid Herts as a ‘Living Well Course Facilitator,’ where I helped spread awareness about key ways to support mental health. It was such a rewarding experience, but I wanted to do more – a fundraising event seemed like the perfect way to say thank you.”
There was just one problem – Lily wasn’t a runner. “I’d never done anything like this before, and honestly, I didn’t think I could. But I’d completed the Couch to 5k programme and, when charity places for the TTP Cambridge Half Marathon opened in June last year, my mum encouraged me to go for it. I was thrilled to get a spot and absolutely honoured to run for such an amazing cause.”
Training and Overcoming Challenges
Lily’s training journey has been a challenge, both physically and mentally. “I’ve gone from doing no running at all to following a structured training plan. I use the Runna app and do strength training at the gym alongside three runs a week. It’s been a huge adjustment, and I’ve had a few minor injuries along the way, but I’ve learned to listen to my body and pace myself.”
Winter training has been particularly tough. “There are days when it’s dark, wet, and cold, and it’s hard to find the motivation to get out the door. But I remind myself why I’m doing this – to give back to a charity that saved me, and to inspire others who might be struggling. That keeps me going, even on the toughest days.”
Lily also acknowledges the mental challenges of preparing for such a big event. “Sometimes, I catch myself comparing my progress to other runners, and that can make me feel anxious. But then I remind myself of how far I’ve come – both physically and mentally. This journey is about more than just running a race; it’s about celebrating progress, resilience, and hope.”
Looking Ahead to Race Day
As the big day approaches, Lily is a mix of nerves and excitement. “I’m so appreciative of all the support I’ve received from family and friends. Some of them are even coming along to cheer me on, which means the world to me. I’ve already hit my fundraising target, but I’m still working to raise more because I know how vital CPSL Mind’s work is for people like me.”
For Lily, the TTP Cambridge Half Marathon is more than a fundraising event – it’s a celebration of how far she’s come and a chance to inspire others to take that first step towards recovery.
Lily’s Advice for Others
Lily is full of wisdom for anyone considering a challenge like this. “Be prepared and make a plan that works for you. Don’t let minor setbacks stop you – whether it’s in running or in life. Most importantly, have fun and enjoy the experience! The journey is just as important as the destination.”
For Lily, running the TTP Cambridge Half Marathon is a powerful reminder of her resilience, growth, and ability to overcome obstacles. Her journey highlights the incredible impact of CPSL Mind and the importance of supporting mental health initiatives.
